The week of March 8th was a time of collaboration, perseverance, and most importantly, philanthropy. Greek Week 2021 at UMiami was able to be completed effectively and safely despite the ongoing pandemic. In its effectiveness, the teams were able to raise over $10,000 for charities, $7,742 of which went to Active Minds. Raising a lower amount than previous years was expected, but at least being able to occur and hit $10,000 even with restrictions has everyone excited. We are thankful for our sponsors, donors, and other financial supporters for helping us hit this number and give back to our community. From a safety standpoint, UM is seeing some of the lowest case numbers it has had since the start of the pandemic. With the money raised and drought of cases, I’d say Greek Week was a success. The brothers of SigEp were also able to find success. After losing their team sorority due to COVID, they were still able to place 3rd overall for the week. Although not all of the events were in person, those that were went well for the brothers. Most importantly, the boys were back this year to claim their title yet again. The annual Greek Row, which was 3 consecutive hours of constant rowing, was a roaring success for SigEp as they won in a landslide by over 5000 meters. The energy at the event was remarkable, with everyone working hard together, cheering each other on, and going all out for the event’s entirety. This win follows years of countless victories in the event for SigEp, at this point it has become a true tradition. SigEp has a target on its back each year as the team to beat, but they simply refuse to lose year in and year out. Furthermore, SigEp was able to place 3rd in the OCheer dance with no girls. Annually, OCheer occurs with fraternities and sororities teamed up on stage to perform. But after losing their sorority team members, the brothers had to fly solo up in front of the crowd. They showed heart and gave it their allin the performance, allowing them to beat two groups that had their entire team. Greek Week Co-Chair and brother of SigEp, Billy Hoy, was pleased with the results of the week and is excited for next year. He said “I definitely hope we are back fully in person next year, but we did the best we could. We faced a lot of challenges due to COVID but still found success. Hopefully we can be back to full speed next year, I miss seeing everyone be able to participate and the energy that they bring.” For being the first in-person philanthropy event at UM since COVID came about, Billy’s team had a lot of pressure to plan and execute the week. But with Billy’s leadership, along with that of board member and SigEp brother, Sonny Stevenson, this fraternity continues to influence success and give back. The Florida Gamma chapter’s tradition of excellence was displayed yet again during this year’s Greek Week, routinely impressing all who witness and continually working for the betterment of all.
